2010 Awards – #4 Manager of the Year – Ian Holloway

22 Dec

Yes Del Bosque won the World Cup, yes Jose won the treble but both managers were blessed with good, if not great teams. What Holloway acheived on a shoe string budget in just getting Blackpool into the Premiership is nothing short of remarkable.

I like most people envisaged Blackpool being this season’s Swindon and becoming the whipping boys of the league. At the time of posting they sit in 10th position (joint on points with Liverpool) and their main striker is on loan from Derby.

Add to this that Ian Holloway is a comedy genius and we have a worthy winner of the 2010 Manager of the Year award. Bonus video below:

2010 Awards – #3 Goal of the Year – Linus Hallenius

22 Dec

Amazing, incredible, almost unbelievable. If this had been scored by someone of Messi, Ronaldo status you’d have never stopped watching it.

I hate him, but in the words of Andy Gray… Linus Hallenius take a bow son.

2010 Awards – #2 Young Player of the Year – Ozil

22 Dec

Ozil has followed a path I wish more more English players would follow. He starred for the succesful U21 German team, before making the seamless step up to the full national team. It seems in England a player with any potential is thrown straight into the deep end and almost bypasses playing in an international U21 tournament. I know there are exceptions to this, Joe Hart being a good example, but in general young English players are not exposed to the competition environment enough early in their career.

Anyway back to Ozil…what a year, superb at club level and outstanding at the World Cup. He has continued to shine at Madrid and seems totally unfazed by pressure (yes he was rubbish against Barcelona, I know).

Notable mentions to Javier Pastore, Gareth Bale, Pedro, David De Gea, Jack Wilshere, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku,

2010 Awards – #1 Player of the Year – Xavi

22 Dec

Some Stats to back this up, not that I need to to:

– Xavi completed 599 passes at the World Cup, the most ever by a player in the tournament.
– By the end of last season, Xavi had completed over 400 more passes than any other player in Spain and over 400 more than any player from any other club in the Champions League.
– In the game against Arsenal he completed more passes than their entire midfield put together.
– In the last 12 months, a player has completed 100 or more passes just 24 times in the whole of Europe. On 12 of those occasions that player was Xavi.

Messi and Villa may score the goals for club and country but this man makes it possible. Pivotal to Spain’s success in 2008 and 2010 and Barcelona’s continued success.

Quite simply the best midfielder in the world bar none.

Classic Goals #3 – Wayne Rooney vs. Newcastle

22 Dec

One word sums this up…SMASH!

2010 was not a good year for Mr. Rooney. Prior to the injury away to Bayern Munich, I would have put money on him starring at the World Cup. As we all know England and Rooney especially didn’t perform and things have not been much better since for Rooney.

As a red I’m hoping that 2011 is a better year for United and Rooney.

Iconic Images #3 – Andres Iniesta vs. Holland

22 Dec

This image for me sums up football in 2010. A year in which although Barcelona missed out on the big European trophy, a select few spanish players from Barcelona (along with a certain little Argentinean) dominated club and international football.
